Dell's tagline for their new line of products pretty much says it all: "Yours is here."
The company has begun banking in on the style game by announcing a fabulous summer line-up of new Inspiron notebooks to be available in mid-July. And if color is your thing, then they surely have something for you. The new line includes the 14.1" Dell Inspiron 1420, the 15.4" Inspiron 1520 and the 17" widescreen Inspiron 1720. All the notebooks are packed full of features and have the new Santa Rosa chips from Intel, but the Inspiron 1521 and 1721 are powered by AMD processors. Pricing for notebooks starts at $1,100. Onto the important thing: color. Take a look at all the beautiful colors to choose from...
Also notable, the announcement of the XPS M1330, dubbed "the world's thinnest 13-inch notebook." Weighing a whole 3.97 lbs at just about 1" thick, this tiny yet high performance notebook features nVidia 8400m graphics, Intel Santa Rosa platform, a slot-loading optical drive, up to 4GB of Dram, a webcam, and LED display.

I don't think it is, there are a lot of companies out there scared to death by data lost and stolen laptops. Colors can help a company determine what is thiers and not.
One other logical step would be if Dell would be willing to do silkscreen for company's logos.
For the unpractical use, this line of laptops are geared to tweenies and teenies. I don't know what your defect is, but if you look around, there isn't much beige computers selling at the stores anymore. Also there aren't any computers that have the "traditional" look to them. (HTPCs, Shuttles, etc.)

It is not gay. It is breaking free of the gray and black most notebook computers come in. It is good to see some customization. I agree that it would be good to have an option for silkcreening of either a company logo or group logo (ie; the Linux penquin, eComStation sphere, etc).
